The Cavs are looking for NBA free agents that can play two ways.

The two biggest needs for the Cleveland Cavs are perimeter scorers and perimeter defenders. They have to make those improvements on a shoe-string budget and with very little in the way of tradeable assets. That leaves the Cavs to chase after NBA free agents to help fill the need. A chase that will end up being difficult due to the lack of flexibility.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t some gems out there that could really affect this team in a positive way if given a chance. After all, look at guys like P.J. Tucker and Bobby Portis. Those were guys no one wanted at one point until they were given a chance and then they both became bodies that any team wanting to be a championship contender needed in order to be a legitimate threat.

Who’s going to be the next guy like that? Who knows, but maybe that player will end up signing with the Cavs this season. We’re going in order, ranking the four guys from what we’ll accept to what could help us excel.

(All men are still free agents as of 3:00 PM ET on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2021)

Honorable Mention: G Kyle Guy

Kyle Guy may be a guy worth taking a flyer on if the Cavs don’t go after some Summer League guys who couldn’t land deals. Guy isn’t a great defender, which is why he’s only an honorable mention. The Cavs are supposed to be a defensive-minded team and the last thing they need is yet another guard who can score but can’t defend. They already have two of those.

He has exceptional three-point shooting, but he’s too raw and too undeveloped right now to warrant a spot in a rotation getting minutes. So while he’s not a top candidate now if the Cavs can’t score during the season or there are injuries and the team is desperate and ready to call it a season, then sure, bring in Guy.

Or if you can’t get anyone else on this list, that’d be another reason.
