4 things Cleveland Browns did right, wrong vs Jaguars in preseason opener
3. Running backs can catch
The running back depth looks strong for the Browns, with D’Ernest Johnson, Joe Johnson and Demetric Felton all contributing to the win.
Most notably, Brown backs contributed most through the passing game–especially in the first half.
Rookie sixth-round pick Demetric Felton and John Kelly each had four catches for 44 yards.
Interestingly, Felton didn’t receive a carry during the first half. All of his action came lining up as a receiver–in the slot.
Fans may be asking about Kelly–and no, not Leroy. John Kelly was a sixth-round pick for the Rams in the 2018. He had 33 combined rushing in 2018 and 2019 for 83 yards. He spent the 2020 campaign on Cleveland’s practice squad.
One of these three players will make the final roster. I know it’s boring, but Johnson showed some chops as a blocker–something you’ve got to be able to do as a third-down back.
That Felton didn’t rush the ball is concerning. That said, you can see why the Browns like him. He’s quick and has big play potential. It will be interesting to see how the battle for the third running job plays ot.
