Cavs set to sign Tacko Fall, RJ Nembhard to two-way deals
Tacko Fall and RJ Nembhard are joining the Cavs under two-way deals
The Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to sign training camp invitees Tacko Fall and RJ Nembhard to two-way contracts, according to Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor. Both players will likely spend time between the Cavs and their G League affiliate Cleveland Charge.
Already a fan favorite since arriving in Northeast Ohio weeks ago, the 7-foot-6 Fall has always been expected to secure one of the two contracts available. Meanwhile, an opportunity opened up for Nembhard after the Cavs waived Brodric Thomas just days ago, one of the team’s two-way players last season.
These moves come as Cavaliers trim their regular season lineup, meaning the rest of the training camp invitees Mitch Ballock, Kyle Guy, and Justin James are likely getting the ax.
Two-way players do not count against the team’s 15-man roster or salary cap.
Tacko Fall will reinforce the Cavs’ Tower City–if needed
During the offseason, the Cavs front office made certain there will be plenty of seven-footers. After selecting number the three overall pick Evan Mobley during this year’s NBA Draft, re-upping Jarrett Allen to a long-term deal, bringing in Lauri Markkanen via trade.
The team also recently brought in veteran big man Ed Davis and continues to employ Kevin Love and Dean Wade. Now that they are also signing Tacko Fall, Cleveland’s Tower City could very well end up legitimately as the tallest frontcourt in the league this season.
While Fall will likely spend most of his time with the newly-relocated Charge squad just across downtown, he might get the occasional call-up on the off chance that the mother club feels the need to add another seven-footer.
Even with meager career averages of 2.7 points and 2.6 rebounds with the Boston Celtics as a reserve, Fall provides the Cavs a reliable insurance policy in case one of the big guys gets hurt–or perhaps shipped off in a trade.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old rookie Nembhard is set to make his NBA debut with the Cavs after going undrafted and appearing for the Miami Heat at the Las Vegas Summer League in August. He previously played four years of Division I basketball as a Texas Christian University Horned Frog.
Cleveland will also need to make a decision on Collin Sexton’s contract extension prior to opening their regular season campaign on the road as they visit the Memphis Grizzlies on October 21st.
