3. Cleveland Guardians really stockpiled these middle infielders

My column from early July looked at the crunch the Guardians were facing when it comes to the 40-man roster. With so many middle infield prospects to protect, it seemed logical to believe they’d trade one of these prospects to upgrade at another position.

The deadline came and went, and while they picked up a nice prospect in Konnor Pilkington for Cesar Hernandez, that was about it.

With an outfield that currently has one every day player, they’veNope. At this point, They seem willing to give my experience in the Westlake Colt League a tryout, because they pretty much protected these middle infielders while the outfield remains such a big question mark, that even The Riddler would be flummoxed.

Big leaguers Gimenez and Rosario will be back, so will Owen Miller, who’s hit at every level except the big leagues–so far. We need to see more. Yu Chang’s still considered a middle infielder and he came on strong toward the end of the season.

Gabriel Arias, acquired in the Clevinger trade, was added earlier, while the team purchased the contract of top prospect Tyler Freeman and another international signing star, Brayan Rocchio.

Additionally, the Guards purchased the contracts of Jose Tena, Jhonkensy Noel (projects as middle infielder) and Richie Palacios (played mostly 2B in 2021, split time in OF).
