The Cleveland Guardians took the first step toward building a 2022 roster by removing seven names from the 40-man squad, while adding 11.

The Guards front office was aggressive in protecting the future of the organization, heavily protecting the treasure trove of middle infielders, while the major league outfield remains a puzzled left unsolved for the past few years.

The Guardians brass must be willing to make significant additions, though, because with a healthy rotation returning in 2022, the club may be capable of competing if the right pieces are added to the roster.

It was great to see Shane Bieber back at the end of 2021, as his couple end-of-the-season appearances should give him confidence that pitching on practice fields, rehabbing from injury, just can’t deliver.

Aaron Civale and Zach Plesac are in the mix too, while Cal Quantrill had one of the best post All-Star breaks you’ll ever see from a pitcher.

The Athletic (subscription required) and. MLB Trade Rumors recently listed some free-agent candidates for the Guardians in 2022. Here’s where those eight candidates should rate on the Guards’ radar.
