Browns’ reinforcements arrive just in time for match up with Ravens
By Chad Porto
The Browns will get back some much-needed help for Sunday’s game.
Lost in the Baker Mayfield debate has been the simple fact that the Browns are playing without some of their best players. While we can debate how much Mayfield’s injuries are affecting the franchise player, or how good the wide receiving corp really is after the disaster of a year that they’ve had; the fact remains the Browns have talent on offense.
We just forget that because the running game is mostly carried by Nick Chubb at the moment and the tackles on the offensive line have, for lack of a better term, sucked.
Thankfully come Sunday, Kareem Hunt and Jack Conklin will be back on the field for the Browns, barring any setback or aggravation of those injuries or another. Blake Hance proved himself to be a worthy guard for the Browns but as a tackle, he was lacking in the quickness needed to get to his spots. D’Ernest Johnson likewise proved to be viable at times, but he lacked the pop needed to be a true replacement for Chubb. While Hunt isn’t on Chubb’s level either (who is?), at least Hunt has that game-tested skillset that the team needs.
The Browns may still be without some key players vs. the Ravens.
Hunt and Conklin are back, but one name is for sure out and that’s speedy rookie Anthony Schwartz. The rookie out of Auburn has been anything but productive. Schwartz has not had a truly big game all year and his issues with route running have been a subject of great discussion. His best game came in Week 1 when Mayfield was healthy. Since then he’s made the odd-play or two but nothing to write home about.
Cleveland may also be without receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones and cornerback Troy Hill. While Schwartz has been ruled out, Peoples-Jones and Hill remain questionable for the game. While the Browns defense may need Hill, the Browns offense certainly needs Peoples-Jones.
Cleveland’s crop of cornerbacks has been as advertised for the most part this year, yet Cleveland’s passing offense needs all the help it can get, especially with Mayfield looking like a Crash Test Dummy with how bandaged up he is.
