3 reasons the Browns need to avoid trading for Deshaun Watson

The trade package for Deshaun Watson would be outrageous

I hear a lot about “the Super Bowl” window. How if the Browns don’t win a Super Bowl during “window” that it will be a giant waste. Firstly, no, it wouldn’t. We were the worst franchise for 20 years in a league that had the Jacksonville Jaguars. I’m perfectly fine with 9-8 records, knowing full well that the alternative could be 2-15 or 0-17. We’ve been there before, don’t lie to yourself and say “you’d rather have that” because no one would believe you. A 9-8 record means you are a few pieces away, not a full team away.

So anyone who thinks trading for Deshaun Watson is going to come cheap is a lunatic and you probably shouldn’t let them have keys to your place. Watson is going to come with a price tag of at least two first-round picks and a Pro Bowl player if not two (at the very least Pro Bowl-caliber players.) Don’t tell me it’s worth it because we need a “Super Bowl” quarterback because Joe Flacco, Jared Goff, and Jimmy Garoppolo are all Super Bowl quarterbacks. Clearly “Super Bowl quarterbacks” don’t exist.

You don’t need a Top 5 or even a Top 10 quarterback in the league to win a Super Bowl. You need a well-built, deep team, that has a clear identity that everyone buys in on. Every winning team in the history of the NFL has had a deep, full team. The narrative that only the “best” quarterbacks win Super Bowls is a lie. A lie propagated by the media and the NFL to sell players.

What does Nick Foles have in common with Russell Wilson, Patrick Mahomes, and Aaron Rodgers?

They all have the same number of Super Bowl wins.

Tom Brady isn’t the standard, he’s the exception. Fans need to stop looking for the next Brady because he isn’t coming. Ever. The Browns need their team to be healthy, which they haven’t been, and they need better players at key positions, especially at receiver. We were very vocal about our concerns at the receiver spot heading into the last offseason but everyone said Donovan Peoples-Jones, a sixth-rounder, was going to be “the guy”.

The Browns can’t afford to give up first-round picks or Pro Bowl players, not if they really want to the playoffs and go for a Super Bowl. After all, not destroying their team after down years is what separated the Patriots and everyone else for all those years. The Patriots made drafting a priority. So if you really want to be like the Pats, then follow their example and don’t make trades with draft picks that are in the first three rounds.
