5 backup QBs Browns should sign to push Baker Mayfield in 2022
The Browns salvaged the regular-season finale against the Bengals, but prior to the contest, Baker Mayfield got some good news.
NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweeted the organization plans to move forward with Mayfield as the starter in 2022.
Even so, Rap Sheet’s report didn’t say anything about an extension. That means Mayfield will be in the final year of his rookie deal, with no commitment from the franchise regarding his future.
It’s unsurprising the Browns put this news out there, as it make sense, for right now ,anyway. It would seem the analytically driven front office will look for an upgrade, but actually getting that player can be complicated.
For example, the Browns would have to be prepared to part with their next few drafts if they make a play for an upper-tier quarterback, like the Rams did last season when LA acquired Matthew Stafford.
If Mayfield comes back as the starter, and I do believe he will, then the front office needs to have a plan in place to push the former No. 1 pick. They’ve got to find out about Mayfield, and it’s time to push him.
I’ve also got to point out. This isn’t all about replacing Mayfield. The Browns obviously have little faith in Keenum. There’s no other way to explain that one after watching the organization trot out an injured Mayfield over a healthy Keenum.
With that in mind, here’s four quarterbacks the Browns should considering signing to push Mayfield in 2022.
