5 backup QBs Browns should sign to push Baker Mayfield in 2022
5. Browns potential Baker Mayfield back up: Jameis Winston
It’s so tempting because he has that one glaring measurable: Imagine the 6-foot-4 Florida State product standing tall in the pocket and hitting Anthony Schwartz in stride for a TD.
OK, Winston’s still just two full seasons removed from throwing 30 interceptions when he was still with the Bucs, but can Stefanski and AVP coach him up? Winston has a reason to accept coaching. He’s running out of time to make it as a starting quarterback.
His latest obstacle is overcoming serious injury. He tore his ACL in Week 8 against the Bucs, so he’ll spend a lot of time rehabbing in hopes of being ready for training camp.
Winston was winning while starting for the Saints, posting a 5-2 record. He has 14 touchdowns compared to three picks. He hadn’t played since Halloween, and even then, he was just three shy of Mayfield’s total. of 17.
If there was a guy to truly push Mayfield, it’s Winston, who was also a No. 1 overall pick.
Winston just turned 28 on Jan. 6 and he probably wants to start. The injury may prohibit him from getting the offers he’d like.
If he does join the QB room with Mayfield, the depth chart will have significantly improved and there’s a starter ready if Mayfield falters.
