Ranking and grading each Browns rookie from the 2021 NFL season
By Chad Porto
2. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah – No. 28
- Drafted: Round 2, Pick 52
- PFF Score: 74.4
- Stats: 14 games played, 10 starts, 76 tackles, four pass deflections
- Grade: B
Coming out of Notre Dame, the slightly undersized Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was seen as a guy who could play linebacker if he gained a bit of weight or safety if he kept it off. He was known for his coverage skills and tackling prowess, and many had him as a Top 20 pick. Then an errant heart issue cropped up, and all of a sudden no one wanted him anymore. The heart issue ended up not being an issue in the long run and the Cleveland Browns drafted the steal of the 2021 NFL Draft in the second round.
For the entire season, Owusu-Koramoah was a solid and reliable player. He was able to do just about anything you asked coverage wise and there was no real bad tackling to speak off from him. His lone issue is he’s not a great pass-rusher but that’s not what he was drafted for. So he’s not perfect, so what?
The problem that holds him back is that he’s not an every-down linebacker. At least not yet. He only eclipsed 80% of snaps on defense just four times this year. That’s a clear sign that Browns’ coaching staff felt he had a hole in his game somewhere, otherwise why take him off the field so often?
Anthony Walker never went under 60% of snaps for a game, while Owusu-Koramoah hit sub-60% seven times in 2021. That’s not me saying he’s a bad player and is a bust; it’s merely an example of why he only gets a B.
