Odell Beckham makes Baker Mayfield look really bad in Rams playoff win
Baker Mayfield didn’t even play, but the wrap of another NFL weekend didn’t put the Cleveland Browns quarterback in the greatest light, all thanks to Odell Beckham Jr.
Beckham, now “free” of Mayfield, as the Twitter movement demanded, was the Rams best offensive first-half weapon as LA built a 21-0 lead before halftime in their Wild Card matchup against the Cardinals. Beckham had his team’s first touchdown and finished with four catches for 54 yards. He also threw a pass, which he completed for 40 yards.
Beckham played with swagger, reminding us all of the player he was with the Giants, before his trade to the Browns.
It has to be frustrating for Browns fans to watch. Cleveland finally gets an elite wide receiver talent, and really, things couldn’t have worked out worse.
Now, just months after Beckham’s dad re-tweeted the highlight video of Mayfield missing his wide-open son, you wonder why the two struggled so much to get on the same page.
Baker Mayfield and OBJ never figured “it” out
It’s not a secret if you’ve read things here: I thought Beckham was the problem, especially after Mayfield thrived in 2020, following Beckham’s season-ending injury.
But Baker stunk with and without OBJ in 2021. Yeah, you’ve always got to give Mayfield the injury excuse, but don’t overlook the larger point. How long did it take Matt Stafford to get on the same page with OBJ? It never happened with Mayfield.
There will continue to be rumors throughout the season, largely because Mayfield was so terrible when the Browns were built to contend.
I do think he’ll be back next season, because finding someone who is better is a tough task. Remember, the Browns walked the quarterback desert for almost 20 years before finding a quarterback capable of leading them to the playoffs in Mayfield.
Getting to the playoffs and winning the Super Bowl are two differing stories, though. While Mayfield as injured, it was obvious, especially later in the season, that he was not seeing receivers. Heck, you didn’t even need the coach’s tape to see it. It was obvious on the broadcast.
Until he fixes this, and makes better throws from the pocket, we’ll all be watching players who used to be Browns playing late into the playoffs.
