5 Browns players destined for future Pro Bowl appearances
By Chad Porto
TE David Njoku
David Njoku had a solid 2021 campaign, despite mismanagement from Kevin Stefanski and inconsistent play from Baker Mayfield. Considering all the upheaval the Cleveland Browns created this year, the fact that Njoku had the season he had is even more impressive.
Firstly, in order for Njoku to be a Pro Bowler in 2023 for the Cleveland Browns, he has to re-sign. That’s the first order of business and that may not happen. The team has to make some hard decisions to clear cap space and make some alterations to improve the receiving corps, and that may come with some hard cuts or at the very least, restructured contracts.
Names like JC Tretter and Jarvis Landry are two names that fans expect to see take pay cuts in 2022 if they want to stick around. The Browns may also opt not to re-sign Njoku.
Part of the reason the Browns may feel able to move on from Njoku is the logjam they’ve created at tight end. Cleveland has Austin Hooper, who’s anything but a play-maker, and Harrison Bryant, who’s struggling to stay on the field due to the same issues at the position. It seems like one player may need to go, as each tight end is splitting the duties of the squad threeways.
The squad does need to clear the log-jam, and maybe one of the moves they could make is moving Njoku from tight end to receiver. We see players change positions every year (Hello, MJ Stewart), and Njoku could simply body most corners without dealing with more physical linebackers. It’s a crazy idea but it could work to get him more reps.
