The Cleveland Browns are set to let safety Ronnie Harrison walk in free agency, according to a report from Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

Cabot cites last year’s signing of John Johnson III, the emergence of Grant Delpit, as well as free-agent safety M.J. Stewart as reasons Cleveland was ready to waive goodbye to the player they acquired from the Jaguars prior to the 2020 campaign.

When looking at the moves the Browns needed to make this offseason, I favored keeping Stewart over Harrison because he’s better in coverage. When the Browns signed Johnson, we were all under the impression he’d be more of a free safety. It turns out, he’s better closer to the line of scrimmage.

That’s the same scouting report on Harrison, so it makes more sense to keep Stewart, who can also cover slot receivers.

Additionally, Harrison made a few dumb mistakes last season that left us scratching the Dawg Pound’s collective head. Most notably, he pushed a Kansas City coach in the season opener. Provoked or not, you’ve got to be able to keep your cool.

Here’s exactly what Cabot wrote, via Cleveland.com.

"“The Browns will likely let Harrison depart thanks to the acquisition of John Johnson III last offseason, the emergence of 2020 second-round pick Grant Delpit and the excellent play of M.J. Stewart, whom the Browns will try to extend before he hits the market.”"

Analytically oriented website PFF lines up with with the Browns analytics driven front office. Harrison ranked 59th among safeties last season, which is terrible.Stewart was fifth in his 13 games, which included three starts, according to Cabot.

Other takeaways from Cleveland Browns week at Combine

1. First the Trivia question: What’s the name of the receiver the Browns drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, one round before Cleveland took Higgins? If you answered Ricardo Louis, you must be his best friend.

The agents of Rashard Higgins and the Browns will meet this week. It’s expected Hollywood will hit the market. It was a good run for the 2016 fifth-round pick, who some may have written off years ago.

Hollywood will be remembered fondly for his time in Cleveland.

2. Cabot reported the Browns want to bring back swing-lineman Chris Hubbard, who missed 2021 after tearing his triceps. The Browns need someone and If Hubbard is healthy and meets their price, why not?

3. Case Keenum’s future is in question. Cabot wrote his future will depend on what happens over the next two weeks. He has a $1.3 million roster bonus March 19. If they sign someone else, they can save $7.1 million on the cap by releasing him.

Cabot throw out Mitch Trubisky’s name, but interesting is reportedly high in the Mentor native because of the lack of available starters.
