Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham share one thing in common.

When you put two volatile and head-strung individuals against one another, especially when they don’t get along, bad things are bound to happen. That was the case with Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr., who both ended up making fans angry during their 2021 seasons. Mayfield for his inconsistent play and presumed failures as a leader, Beckham for being a malcontent and locker room distraction who needed his father to fight his battles.

Neither man looked good after the year, and while some will want to spin narratives, the truth is that neither man came out of 2021 with their reputation the same as it was prior. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that both men made the “Most Hated” list.

The list is compiled by BetOnline (via Yahoo.com and Fort Worth Star-Telegram) and is a list that compiles more than a million Twitter posts during the month of December. Aaron Rodgers and Antonio Brown are no. 1 and 2, but former Browns receiver Beckham and current Browns quarterback Mayfield are No’s 4 and 9 respectively.

  1. Aaron Rodgers, 266,850

Neither Bakery Mayfield nor Odell Beckham did themselves any favors in 2022

There’s blame for both, that’s for sure. Beckham’s antics are not new, and his attitude problems have plagued him his entire career. Mayfield continued to have his ups and downs with the media during the season, right or wrong and the media didn’t relent.

Too many people came at Mayfield incorrectly for his desire to play with a torn shoulder. Many felt he should’ve decided to bench himself, as his injury did affect his play, but that’s ultimately on head coach Kevin Stefanski to make that decision.

Mayfield and Beckham are polarizing players, both of whom have their detractors and supporters but only one will likey have a chance to bounce back from their bad 2021 season. Beckham will likely never be the same, suffering a devastating torn ACL during the Super Bowl, a Super Bowl that Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald all but won on their own.

This is Beckham’s second ACL tear, and after a history of lower leg injuries that have nerfed a lot of his talents, the once-dynamic wide receiver will be lucky to hold onto a roster spot.

Mayfield will get one more shot with a revamped and retooled offense around him but if he fails in 2022, even if there’s blame to share, it will be Mayfield’s last in Cleveland.

Both men need to work on their attitudes and how they work with their teammates if their legacies are going to improve from beyond what they currently are.
