The Cleveland Browns may have been mocked into the best pick at No. 44

The Cleveland Browns don’t have a first-round pick for the next three years, because they gave them up to Houston to acquire Deshaun Watson and his 22 civil suits (and 25 accusations) surrounding his alleged sexual misconduct allegations. So the Browns are going to have to secure every second and third-rounder they have in the meantime so that the team can replace and reload instead of rebuilding.

With the Browns paying $45 million to Watson over the following four years (2023-2026), the team’s cap is going to be hell. So replacing key guys in the draft is has never been more important and that job got harder without a first-round pick. That said, the folks at Touchdown Wire may have just mock drafted the best possible player for the Browns in the second round at pick no. 44.

A wide receiver from Cincinnati University, Alec Pierce.

Pierce wasn’t a name many had on their radar prior to the trade, with OSU standouts Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson being the prime focus of the Browns’ draft, and rightfully so. With both men likely to not last past No. 20, let alone into the second round, the Browns may have to get creative.

Hopefully, someone like Skyy Moore is still there in the third or fourth round; and if the team has to trade for him, so be it, but getting Pierce should be the team’s new number one priority for the draft.

Alec Pierce is, on paper, everything the Cleveland Browns should want.

The Cleveland Browns need a tall, boundary-attacking receiver who can get open and cause some serious issues against opposing defenses. He’s all those things, in theory. No draft pick should ever be considered an obvious hit, instead, people should just simply grade him based on what tangible attributes he carries.

Pierce carries many of those things. He’s got great breakaway speed, with a 4.41 40-time. He’s tall, well over 6’3, and he’s heavy (but not overly heavy) at 213 lbs. He also has the same vertical leaping ability as Chase Claypool.

In fact, that’s a good comparison, as they’re similar in size, both started off slow in college, and both are able to stretch the field. Here’s the bonus, technically, Pierce is faster. It may be by .01 of a second, but we’re counting it.

Pierce is the right pick for the Browns to start the second day, so here’s hoping they stop making boneheaded mistakes and draft the right guy.
