Guardians Series Review: Guards impersonate the weather, go cold against The Giants
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Guardians did not have a good weekend series vs. the Giants.
Thank goodness for minor miracles, as the weather rained/snowed out the first two games for the Guardians and White Sox series, allowing a slightly late recap of the weekend Giants series to get put in the books properly. While we’re here, any one-game series are going to be skipped in recaps for the simple fact that while baseball is a long game, it’s not always a very deep game.
Sometimes all you gotta know is that one team struck out a lot of guys and the other team scored no runs.
Ironic considering the series at hand.
The Giants came in dealing like a Las Vegas card dealer, absolutely wrecking the Guardians’ offense. I blame part of it on the weather, the other part on the Giants just having a better pitching staff than that of the Royals and Reds, and Tom Hanks.
Why Hanks? I don’t know, I have no one else to blame, so that’s kinda why.
Hanks’ involvement in the home opener, which kicked off the opening series of the season at Progressive Field, was a true highlight. We just didn’t know that it would be the only highlight of the weekend.
The Giants froze out the Guardians hitting
Game 1 – Giants W 4-1
Zach Plesac pitched a heck of a game, giving up just two runs across 5.1 innings with four strikeouts but he got no help from the offensive who had just three hits. Who knew the former White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon was going to be so good. Owen Miller continued his hot start, knocking in his seventh RBI, and Jose Ramirez is now on a seven-game hitting streak.
Game 2 – W Giants 4-2
Cal Quantrill looked real good once again and kept the Giants to just two runs, but an anemic offense and Nick Sandlin coming in relief made sure the Guards fell flat for the second straight game. Franmil Reyes had three strikeouts. Owen Miller, Myles Straw, Jose Ramirez, and Josh Naylor each had two hits, which made up all the hits the team could muster.
Game 3 – W Giants 8-1
Like with Quantrill and Plesac, Aaron Civale started off with a good outing, going four innings and only giving up three earned runs. Eli Morgan and Anthony Castro gave up two more earned runs. The defense was once again an issue, with Miller missing an easy throw to Bobby Bradley, though there were debates on whether that should’ve been an error on the radio broadcast.
Top 4
Jose Ramirez
Ramirez is on a nine-game hitting streak to start the season, and a 13-game hitting streak dating back to last season. He’s far from Joe DiMaggio’s 56, but if he gets to 30-games then we might be cooking with fire.
Owen Miller
2-8, two runs, three walks
Anthony Gose
2 appearances, 1.2, 1 H,1 BB, 0 ER, 3 K
Sam Hentges
