The Cleveland Browns traded out of the second round to take a cornerback.

The Cleveland Browns traded away their 2022 first-round pick (among other first-rounders) to get Deshaun Watson and his 25 sexual misconduct accusations from the Houston Texans. They then traded their second-round pick, the 44th overall pick in the draft, again with the Texans.

The Browns got picks no. 99, 108, and 124 in the trade, making the 68th pick in the draft their first one. With their first pick, which was near the start of the third round, the Browns picked a cornerback, Martin Emerson out of Mississippi State.

Emerson will join a Browns’ locker room that includes Denzel Ward, Greedy Williams, Greg Newsome, and Troy Hill already. They also have AJ Green, who showed promise in his limited action. The team didn’t need yet another corner, but yet, here we are.

The Cleveland Browns needed receivers and defensive tackles

The Cleveland Browns passed on the most impressive receivers available after their second-round trade. They lost out on receivers like Skyy Moore and Alec Pierce, who were still there at No. 44, as well as defensive line players like David Ojabo, Josh Pascal, and tight end Trey McBride. All players the team could’ve used.

They also missed out on linebackers like Chad Muma and Troy Anderson. Anderson ran a 4.41 40-yard dash and had incredible mobility, something they desperately needed alongside Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

The team also didn’t even go after a defensive tackle, while the receiver corp is depleted and the linebackers are not that impressive, they didn’t even make an attempt to get one of the better defensive tackles on the board.

This is despite the fact that the position is the weakest it’s been in years, at least on paper.

Historically first and second-round picks play better than fourth-round picks, so it’s really unclear why GM Andrew Berry passed on getting the best players on the board. It’s not like his third and fourth-round picks from 2020 or 2021 have panned out.

The Browns’ entire offseason has been a mess, and this draft is just making it worse.
