Cleveland Browns not likely to bring Jarvis Landry back, not targeting other veteran receivers
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Browns are likely done adding pieces at receiver, including Jarvis Landry.
The Cleveland Browns have made it known that they’re apparently happy with the receiving corps on the team. Why they would be is anyone’s guess, but here we are. The team added two rookies in the NFL Draft and traded for former Cowboys star Amari Cooper. The two rookies were mid-to-late round picks, and Cooper fell off in his last year in Dallas.
These are reasons many thought the Browns would, at the very least, go after their recently-released veteran wideout in Jarvis Landry. According to Mary Kay Cabot, that’s not the case. She wrote the following about Landry returning to the Browns.
"After taking Purdue receiver David Bell in the third round, it’s unlikely that they’ll re-sign Jarvis Landry. Although Bell can play outside, he’ll probably initially work in the slot, which would make Landry expendable. Landry also visited his hometown Saints recently, and might still have an opportunity to sign there.Other teams have expressed interest in the five-time Pro Bowler, and he could have multiple opportunities in the coming weeks. But it appears the door is closed on a Cleveland return."
Now some of my regular readers often voice their dislike of Cabot, which I think is unfair. Her opinions are subject to scrutiny, sure, but her reporting is top-notch. This quote is her opinion on the matter, which is informed by the information she’s told. If she thinks Landry is out, believe it. Things can always change, just don’t depend on them to do so.
The Cleveland Browns are not looking at other veteran receivers either
Apparently, Cooper, David Bell, Donovan Peoples-Jones, and Anthony Schwartz will be the go-to guys for embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson and his 25 sexual misconduct accusations. Cabot goes on to write in the same piece that no other veterans are on the Browns’ radar at the moment;
"At this point, there’s not been interest in free agent receivers Will Fuller, formerly of the Texans, and Cole Beasley, formerly of the Bills, or other veterans. The Browns like the makeup of their receiver room, and are poised to move forward with their current group, bolstered by Amari Cooper, Bell and sixth-round pick Michael Woods.The Browns are confident that Watson will make Donovan Peoples-Jones, Anthony Schwartz and the other young receivers better, and don’t feel pressured to add another vet. Besides, now that David Njoku is the No. 1 tight end, he’s likely to get more than the 53 targets he got last season."
Her logic, especially about David Njoku getting more targets is sound. If that ends up being the case is anyone’s guess at this moment. Sports cannot be assumed, they have to be executed, otherwise, we’d just give the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup, etc to the odds on favorite after the offseason.
