David Bell and Demetric Felton will be crucial for the Cleveland Browns passing offense
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Browns may have something brewing with David Bell and Demetric Felton.
It appears that the Cleveland Browns are going to lean on David Bell and Demetric Felton heading into the 2022 season as receivers. The team traded for Amari Cooper and it still has Donovan Peoples-Jones on the roster still, but a lot of people still think Peoples-Jones isn’t on the level of being a true number two receiver. So it makes sense that Bell and Felton would be guys that the team looks toward to step up.
With Bell, he’s had a great camp, and apparently caught everything but COVID while there. Considering drops were a huge issue during the Odell Beckham/Jarvis Landry era, getting guys with solid hands is imperative.
With Felton, he may not be the best prospect after his lackluster rookie year, but by all accounts, he’s moved over from being a running back to a receiver. In one video released during their time at Cleveland Browns Stadium, the running back group was seen walking to practice and it noticeably lacked Felton. This got many people speculating that Felton’s more than likely getting far more reps as a receiver than anywhere else.
The Cleveland Browns need someone to step up next to Amari Cooper
The Browns have a lot of unknowns and they’re in a very unique situation. They’re a very young team, with a lot of young prospects who aren’t completely a known commodity. They’re also a Super Bowl contending team (in theory), so having so much young, unknown commodities that they’re relying on is a bit interesting.
Guys like Peoples-Jones, Felton, Bell, and Anthony Schwartz are not done developing yet, at least we hope they’re not. They need a lot more work and a lot of opportunities to show that they can play. They also need to prove they can compete. Especially if Felton’s in the receiving corp now. That may be down to the notion that Schwartz isn’t cutting it.
Peoples-Jones will be the second starter, and it’s looking like Bell may leap into that No. 3 spot. That’s all camp-talk, however, as the season will really prove who should be where. The issue comes down to the fact that Cooper, as much of an upgrade as he is, is declining and the team needs help around him.
Cooper may not bottom out in one season, but expecting him to be a Top 10 receiver may not be realistic. The worst possible thing is to change the offense to this run-and-gun style they want and find out that you only have one potential game-changing receiver.
If guys like Schwartz, Felton, Bell, and Peoples-Jones don’t make moves this year, the Browns’ offense won’t be great and may not even be good. It’s very possible that if the team struggles offensively, with or without their new quarterback, Schwartz, Felton, and Peoples-Jones are on their way out.
