Series Review: Cleveland Guardians sweep Colorado Rockies and get new minority owner
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Guardians have swept the Colorado Rockies
The Cleveland Guardians are on a roll, going 13-3 over their last 16 to pull their record to 33-27, remaining two back against the Minnesota Twins. The Twins actually have more losses than the Guardians but have played six more games than Cleveland which gives us the discrepancy.
Headway in the division isn’t the only thing the Guardians got this series, as it was announced that David Blitzer, the minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils, and Real Salt Lake has acquired a 30% stake in the team, with the ability to take control of the club in 5-6 years. I’ve always been a Dolan fan, so I’m concerned about any change to the status quo. We’ll have to see in time what this looks like.
Speaking of waiting to see, Myles Straw needs to be bumped down in the lineup. He didn’t start in Game 3 against the Rockies and it seems likely he’ll fall down a few spots to help take the pressure off him. Steven Kwan, Andres Gimenez, and Oscar Gonzalez all make since due to their team-high on-base percentage.
The Guards need to figure out their leadoff hitter situation soon, as a trip to the Los Angeles Dodgers is on the horizon.
Cleveland Guardians sweep Colorado Rockies
Game 1 – Guardians Win (4-3)
Shane Bieber may have had a good start wasted but a win’s a win, and that’s what the Guardians were able to pull off in the 10th inning, behind a masterful performance by Eli Morgan, Bryan Shaw, and Emmanuel Clase to hold the Rockies in check. Shaw and Clase got the win and save respectively. Jose Ramirez’s three RBIs and go-ahead double didn’t hurt either.
Game 2 – Guardians Win (7-5)
Another come-back win, but this time in the middle of the game, as the Guardians came back from a 4-2 deficit behind strong games by Amed Rosario and Jose Ramirez. The bullpen also held their own, making sure the offense’s strong performance wasn’t in vain, with Shaw and Clase once again delivering with a win and a save.
Game 3 – Guardians Win (4-2)
Triston McKenzie may not have the record he deserves but he put in one heck of an outing against the Rockies to drop his ERA below 3.00. Emmanuel Clase pitched for the third straight game, getting yet another save. Offensively a three-run second inning was all the team needed.
