3 times the Cleveland Browns could’ve avoided the current quarterback mess

There were three times the Cleveland Browns could’ve avoided the mess that involves Deshaun Watson and Baker Mayfield.
The Cleveland Browns are currently in possession of two playoff-caliber quarterbacks. By August, they may have none, at least for the 2022 season. While the Deshaun Watson hearings are filled with all sorts of conjecture, and Baker Mayfield is still in Cleveland despite two teams “desperate” to get a deal done, it’s becoming clearer and clearer the Browns have an untenable mess.
Not only is Mayfield going to be among the greatest “What If’s” in Browns’ history but Watson’s entire process may resort to him being suspended too little or too many games depending on what side of the fanbase you fall on. To say this off-season has been a mess with all of the distractions is a huge understatement.
Did we mention that the Browns are trying to implement a new offense to cater to Watson? Sure would be a shame if he got suspended for a lengthy amount of time. 2022 is going to be a quagmire of a season, and it all could’ve been avoided had the Browns handled their business differently.
Over the last five years, there have been three (four if you believe the Russell Wilson to Cleveland in 2018 rumors) where the Browns had a real shot of improving their quarterback room long-term. All three times they opted not and we’re going to painfully go through each and every one.
Because the pain we’re all feeling from this debacle of an off-season cannot and will not end anytime soon. So relish it, it’ll let you know you’re still alive.
