Series Review: New York Yankees smash the Cleveland Guardians
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Guardians had a rough series against the New York Yankees.
The Cleveland Guardians got their face kicked in this week against the New York Yankees, not only due to the bats, which produced 19 runs in three games but also due to the awful Yankee fans that traveled from New York (or locally) to cheer for those Bronx bad guys.
The Guardians frankly couldn’t fend off the bats in two of the first games, with Kirk McCarty and Aaron Civale giving up four runs in Games 1 and 2. It’s a clear sign the Guardians need a fifth starter. Shane Bieber and Cal Quantrill are great, Triston McKenzie has promise and talent but can be inconsistent and Zach Plesac isn’t what he was. They’re a good-enough-forsome on their own but they don’t have a fifth starter they can rely on at the moment.
The Guardians are still above .500, at 40-36, and are only two games out of the AL Central title with five games to go until the halfway point of the season. This team is poised to make some noise if they can get another starter and a little more consistent hitting. We’re not even talking huge names, but if they can swing for a hitting catcher and a fifth starter, this team can make a run.
The Cleveland Guardians got lit up like the fourth of July against the New York Yankees
Game 1 – Yankees Win (13-4)
The entire Guardians pitching got lit up in what became the first of an unexpected double-header. Four runs are usually enough to win you a game but not when the other team drops 13 on your head.
Game 2 – Yankees Win (6-1)
Watching Jose Ramirez strike out three times is not what fans were hoping for in the second of a slightly impromptu doubleheader. The Guardians only mustered one run, despite having the same number of hits (seven) as the Yankees.
Game 3 – Guardians (2-0)
Triston McKenzie held the team together, shaking off a nasty June to rebound strong to start July. Franmil Reyes was also on another level for this one, as he knocked in both of the Guardians’ two runs for the game to help avoid the sweep.
