Did the Cleveland Cavaliers screw up the Collin Sexton negotiations?
By Chad Porto
Collin Sexton is apparently miffed with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
News is now out that the Cleveland Cavaliers have offered Collin Sexton a new deal in the range of three years and $40 million over the life of the contract. That’s about $13.33 million per year. Sexton, who was rumored to want something north of $20 million per year, probably over the same length of time, turned down the Cavs’ offer.
Chris Fedor claims (via CavsNation.com), that the deal was way less than he believed he should get. There are also some rumblings that Sexton may be miffed at the offer.
"It’s just not at the money that he believes he should get and his camp believes he deserves"
It’s also being reported by Fedor (via BleacherReport) that many in the NBA believe Sexton has no market currently. This isn’t surprising, as he’s coming off an injury-plagued year, and teams spent all of their money early in the free agent process. If Sexton is going to get paid this, it’d be by a sign and trade.
The Cleveland Cavaliers should play this slow and see how it develops
As a commentator, I’m less worried about how much someone makes, and more worried about how to build the best team. Whenever I write anything, it’s about if the team needs this piece, could use that piece, or should get rid of that other piece. When it comes to the Cavs and Sexton, I do believe has value on the floor for the team.
Assuming he bounces back from his injury.
I think he could be a Lou Williams/Jason Terry-type of guy off the bench. I think he gives the team a bunch in the arm but he isn’t irreplaceable. The team was fine without him last year, it was the injury to Ricky Rubio that sunk the team.
So the Cavs should play this out, no one has the money to sign Sexton to what he wants, and he’d be a fool to play on the qualified offer, as that’s six million less than what he’d be making if takes the Cavs contract.
If he does take it, he’ll get financial security, have a three-year window to build back up his value, and go into free agency again at 25.
If he doesn’t, who knows how this season goes, as he’s no longer as important or necessary to the team, not after getting Caris Levert for nothing. Sexton has to be smart about this, silence his ego and take the offer. It’s the smart play and the Cavs know it.
If the relationship has degraded too much, flip him for some assets and call it a day. The Cavs are in a win/win spot right now. Hopefully, that doesn’t change due to injuries.
