Is the best Cleveland Cavaliers prospect Darius Garland or Evan Mobley?

Bleacher Report is really trying to start issues with the Cleveland Cavaliers fandom by asking some pretty heinous questions. Namely, is Darius Garland or Evan Mobley the better prospect? That’s some pretty aggressive questioning considering just how good both men already are.

Yet, it seems like a question worthy of debate, after all that Mobley did as a rookie on both sides of the court was phenomenal. He was robbed of the NBA Rookie of the Year Award and dare I say, he and Allen should’ve been on the NBA All-Defensive Teams.

Neither were, but both belonged. Mobley had a great year. For that matter, though, so did Garland. Garland was sixth in the league in assists per game, behind Luka Doncic, Dejounte Murray, Tray Young, James Harden, and Chris Paul.

He was seventh overall in total assists. He also dropped nearly 22 points, on 46% shooting from the floor, 38% from three, and 89% from the free-throw line. All while making his first All-Star Game appearance.

Who really is the better Cleveland Cavalier prospect; Evan Mobley or Darius Garland?

I hate this question, as the Cavaliers are such a “team” that you can’t remove one without hurting the team considerably. They are both needed. Yet, if we’re talking dollar value, Mobley is the better prospect, just because he’s making about a quarter of what Garland is making.

Yet, if we’re talking about the impact on both sides of the court, then that’s still Mobley.

However, if we’re talking about the ability to take over the game offensively and lead a team to a comeback win, that’s Garland. As great as Mobley is, he’s not a playmaker offensively. He can hit his shot, bang around in the low post, and do damage, but he’s not the playmaker that Garland is.

Defensively, he absolutely is, but great defensive plays aren’t as common as great offensive plays, so it’s not as likely that Mobley will be able to change the course of the game with his defensive stands alone. There are just not that many opportunities.

Between shooting and passing, Garland had about 20 opportunities to affect the offense on his own, while between blocks, defensive rebounds, and steals, Mobley had about 10 opportunities and I’m rounding up.

Yes, his “presence” does count and teams adjust to match him, but if Mobley’s defensive presence counts, so does Garland’s offensive presence.

Again, neither guy can be lost if the team hopes to compete, they are simpatico. Yet, Garland, offensively, outperforms Mobley defensively. So the better prospect, or the most important prospect, has to be Garland.

Regardless if you agree with more or not, you can at least agree that Isaac Okoro should not be on the list.
