Sheldon Day’s release leads list of moves made by the Cleveland Browns on Cut Day No. 1
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Browns made some decisions on Tuesday, including cutting Sheldon Day.
The Cleveland Browns cleared some roster space on Tuesday, as expected. The team opened up four roster spots alone on Tuesday, while the Browns waived the fifth player on Monday to make room for the returning Denzel Ward.
All in total, what exactly has the team done? Well, they outright released one player and a bit of a surprising one in Sheldon Day. The defensive tackle was seen as by many a near sure-starter on the team, primarily due to the lack of established talent at the position. Yet, seeing the Browns pass on him means he was far from impressing people. Considering his back issues, it’s not surprising that no one was impressed with him. He could hardly get out of the locker room, didn’t play against Jacksonville, and wasn’t really a big name, to begin with.
It makes sense to cut him, eventually, but in week one? They must fear his back injury is worse than expected.
What other moves did the Cleveland Browns make this week?
The Browns also waived receiver Derrick Dillion on Monday, and offensive tackle Elijah Nkansah on Tuesday. Nkansah’s waive was injury related, while Dillion was done following Ward’s return from the PUP list. Neither player is shocking that they were released, and these fringe names are what is usually expected at this juncture.
The Browns still needed to clear two more roster spots, and that’s where the obvious came into play. Two centers, Nick Harris and Dawson Deaton both suffered major injuries in a matter of days. Harris went down during the Jaguars game with a knee injury and apparently it was severe enough to place him on the injured reserved list.
Joining him is rookie Deaton, who tore his ACL in practice and was likewise added to the IR.
The three of them now join receiver and returner, Jakeem Grant, on the IR. Due to all three men arriving on the IR during the preseason, they are no longer eligible to play at any point in 2022 but considering their respective injuries, that was never a realistic possibility to think of in the first place.
