Series Review: Cleveland Guardians outlast the Detroit Tigers and the officiating crew to split series
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Guardians split with the Detroit Tigers.
The Cleveland Guardians split a series that many expected them to win, going 2-2 with the Detroit Tigers. Things started off well, winning the first of two games on Monday. The follow-up didn’t go as well. The third game was marred in controversy and Austin Hedges going full verbal-ham hock on the officiating crew.
Guys, he doesn’t make that much money, being the 91st best catcher in the league and all, please don’t fine him too much.
The Guards showed off just how potent this offense is in the fourth game, however, winning 8-4 after a five-run eighth. The team really could’ve swept the series, but a rookie starter, a fatigued bullpen, and some erroneous errors by the ump and his crew hurt them. That said, I’ll take a 2-2 split with the Tigers as long as we’re still in first place.
Though ESPN has the Chicago White Sox as having a better chance of making the playoffs, and frankly, I find that just rude.
Cleveland Guardians vs. Detroit Tigers Series Review
Game 1 – Guardians Win (4-1)
Aaron Civale ran down the Tigers in a spectacular outing, giving up just three hits, while Andres Gimenez also had a massive day, knocking in three runs to secure the win.
Game 2 – Tigers Win (7-5)
For rookie Xzavion Curry’s first start with the Guardians, it could’ve gone worse, giving up eight hits but only three runs. The bullpen fell down in relief, and the offense, while an impressive five-run outing, could not come back in the later innings to win.
Game 3 – Tigers Win (4-3)
Controversy abounds as Zach Plesac falls to 2-11 on the year. An early base running issue allowed a run to go on the board for the Tigers, followed by a controversial call in the 9th that really set off Austin Hedges.
Game 4 – Guardians Win (8-4)
It looked like the first series loss since July until the Guardians kicked open the door with a five-run eighth inning. Jose Ramirez and Oscar Gonzalez each had two RBIs to help the Guards split the series.
