The Cleveland Browns would be wise to consider this D’Ernest Johnson trade idea.

The Cleveland Browns are still looking for some help at the receiver position. While some guys, namely David Bell, have looked good, they’re still younger players who have no experience against top guys in the league. It’s just as likely that Bell can’t get open against the top guys on defense as he is to win rookie of the year.

There is no historical precedent for these guys, so we have no idea what to expect. We just gauge their progress and talk about whose stock is up and whose is down, but neither of that is a sign that a player is good or bad, just what the perception of them is.

So I’m not surprised to see what one NFL fan on Twitter suggested as a trade idea. Twitter user @T_Johnson_TJ suggested the Browns trade running back D’Ernest Johnson to the New York Giants for receiver Darius Slayton.

I like Johnson a lot, but the Browns are super deep at running back. You have Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, Johnson, Demetric Felton, John Kelly, and Jerome Ford at running back, and only Kelly is expected to be cut.

Aside from Kelly, the Browns have two expiring contracts at the position, Johnson and Hunt. The Browns may not be able to re-sign either man and should consider trading either or even both to help the receiving corp.

While Slayton isn’t ideal, he’s got a 4.39 40-yard-dash, and instantly adds some explosiveness to the Browns’ offense. I would make this trade, only because I don’t think you’re getting a proven 1,000-yard receiver, in his prime, for Johnson, and a speedster isn’t that common to get in a straight-up trade.

Plus considering the only other real “burner” the Browns have is Anthony Schwartz, who is a threat to be cut, the Browns need some speed across from Amari Cooper. I’d make this trade, and I’d even consider trading Hunt if a new deal is that far apart from happening.

Next. The good and the bad from the Cleveland Browns game against the Philadelphia Eagles. dark
