The Cleveland Browns cut the 5 right players this week
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Browns have cut five move players but none that warranted a spot.
The Cleveland Browns had a solid outing against the Philadelphia Eagles, with both teams mostly playing their immediate backups throughout the game. The Browns had a lot of guys look really good in their limited time and really only a few looked objectively bad.
Those “bad” players won’t be cut, due to their youth and the team’s invested capital in them. So the week two cuts were never going to be about anything other than getting rid of some of the middling prospects.
While a Sheldon Day release in week one was surprising, it didn’t seem likely that we’d get a second round of that this week. So when the Browns announced the five men that were cut, it was mostly a ho-hum event.
Who did the Cleveland Browns cut?
The team opted to cut punter Joseph Charlton, safety Luther Kirk, offensive tackle Wyatt Miller, cornerback Parnell Motley, and tight end Marcus Santos-Silva. Santos-Silva is largely the only name that may or may not surprise you. He was the basketball player turned football player in the vein of Antonio Gates but he lacked the athleticism needed to make the transfer. Some will still see him as a guy with potential but he never really showed that potential.
Miller was just brought in, so his departure isn’t entirely shocking, while Kirk and Motley made very little noise all offseason. Charlton was the only “surprise”, if you will, as he was in one of the few, underreported camp battles this year. The Browns cutting him means that the team will go with Corey Bojorquez as their full-time punter.
The Browns now have to cut an additional 27 names heading into the regular season. They’ll have one more game, where the starters are expected to play, but after that, the team has to make moves to cut down to 53 names.
Some of the guys cut will make it to the practice squad, but most won’t. With how Andrew Berry values “his” guys that he drafted, it should be a pretty predictable cut-down, but nothing is guaranteed.
