Three Cleveland Browns who were drafted and fighting for their futures

The Cleveland Browns are not in a place where they can continue to hang on to lackluster and underperforming rookies. Andrew Berry seems to think he’s never wrong, as he continues to hold onto players who don’t perform. Some fans like to hold onto the idea that a player can develop over time.

In truth, you know what a player could be after a season and after two you know what he will be. there are always outliers, but to harm the development of the team by hanging onto poorly performing players just for that one possibility is malpractice of the highest order.

The Browns are not a Super Bowl team and it’s because of the dogged desire to hold onto players that Berry has drafted. Players need to start getting shown the door so the team can actually see what they have at these positions beyond the struggling draftees.

The Cleveland Browns need to rectify these drafted mistakes

Demetric Felton

I believe it was the commentary on the Browns game that pointed out how much of a dog house Demetric Felton and Anthony Schwartz must be in if David Njoku is the guy you’re calling for jet sweeps. They’d be correct. Felton is taking a roster spot and isn’t even playing. He’s dressing and not being used. The Browns are carrying him but for what reason? No one expected him to be around for long, he’s a 6th-round pick, so why is Andrew Berry so hesitant to get rid of an underperforming and lackluster player? Keep in mind, his “other job” is a returner, and the Browns took his punt return duties away from him due to how bad he’s been.

Anthony Schwartz

A receiver who can’t catch, what a concept. Another third-round disappointment, Schwartz has more rushing yards, on one hand, off (20) than he does in four games catching (19). In his defense, he’s only been targeted twice. In Jacoby Brissett’s defense, that’s two more times than I’d be willing to throw at a guy who can’t catch anything. And to think, Berry thought he was done improving the receiver corp cus he got Amari Cooper and a third-round receiver. Gee. Why doesn’t the Browns have a better passing game?

Jedrick Wills

Jedrick Wills posted great PFF numbers against the Atlanta Falcons. He better have, they’ve given up the 8th most yards in the league through four games, and the 6th most points. They’re a bad defense. The Browns have played, and I can’t emphasize that enough, very bad teams through four games and they should be 1-3. This compounds how lucky the Browns have been.

Wills is not a left tackle. Not a starting one anyway. There may be hope for him as a right tackle or even as a guard, but he’s not cut out to be an NFL left tackle. He’s too slow of foot and doesn’t recover well if he’s beat. If he were a 6th rounder, keep him. Sign him to an extension and find a place to get the most out of him. That’s not the case. He was the 10th overall pick in the 2020 draft. Taken over guys like Triston Wirfs, and Ezra Cleveland. Wills is going to ask for a lot of money and considering Berry has been giving deals to guys that will stay on the cap after they leave the team, it’s very likely this team will be dealing with a cap hell unlike anything we’ve seen before. So why over-pay for an underperforming player?
