3 Cleveland Browns who could be released this season
By Chad Porto
If Richard LeCounte isn’t safe, none of these Cleveland Browns are.
Andrew Berry once famously said he’ll continue improving the Cleveland Browns all year round. We saw that first hand on Sunday, just hours after losing to the Los Angeles Chargers, Berry traded for injured linebacker Deion Jones.
Jones, who has had some excellent years early in his career, seems to be on a downswing of sorts and long removed from his lone Pro Bowl season. That said, the team’s in dire need of more linebackers, especially after Jacob Phillips failed to step up. None of this would be necessary had Anthony Walker not gotten hurt, but he did, so here we are.
The failure of any of the linebackers Berry drafted (besides Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah) to prove to be capable to fill in is an indictment on Berry, but making a trade for Jones may just help. That is if Jones can get healthy, stay healthy and return to his 2019 form.
His arrival is also a reminder that if Berry is going to continuously upgrade the team, some guys may not make it through the season. Richard LeCounte was cut (and re-signed to the practice squad), so we know Berry can cut some of his drafted players. Will he, who knows, but here are three that could be gone by December.
Three Cleveland Browns who could get cut mid-season
Demetric Felton
The Cleveland Browns aren’t running a lot of multi-receiver packages, and the Browns are barely touching D’Ernest Johnson, so there really is no purpose for Demetric Felton anymore. Especially with him losing his spot as a returner on special teams. Jerome Ford, Donovan Peoples-Jones, and Chester Rogers have all done the job as of late. Felton is on borrowed time.
Tommy Togiai
Tommy Togiai wasn’t a starter at Ohio State and was still a mid-round pick. It turns out that being naturally strong isn’t a great indicator that you’d be a good NFL player. Togia, is not, for what it’s worth. He’s the lowest PFF-graded player on the Browns and has provided zero impact defensively. Jordan Elliot can also be included here, as he’s playing terribly as well. If the Browns sign a veteran, Togiai could be gone.
A.J. Green
I would include Elliot on this list, but I’m trying to be diverse in my positions and A.J. Green is prime to get cut. He’s got a 0.1 grade better than Togiai and the Browns’ secondary is in shambles this year. He’s an undrafted player, sure but he’s still on the team, taking a roster spot and playing poorly. If the Browns go looking for a CB or safety, Green is the first candidate to be cut to make room.
