Jacoby Brissett isn’t the only guy who deserves a shot after a stint with the Cleveland Browns

Joshua Dobbs will give the Detroit Lions some depth and options

The Cleveland Browns have had a slew of quarterbacks on their roster this year. Starting the offseason, the team had Baker Mayfield, then the team traded for Deshaun Watson, who then got suspended for 11 games for being a creep. That led to Mayfield’s trade to the Carolina, and the signing of former Patriots, Colts, and Dolphins quarterback Jacoby Brissett. The team didn’t retain former backup, Case Keenum, and so with Watson’s suspension and Brissett becoming the team’s interim starter, a backup had to be had, and that was Joshua Dobbs.

Brissett looked good for stretches as a starter but there were times that fans were calling for Dobbs to get some time, as he was a very dynamic player in the preseason. He didn’t have Brissett’s field vision, but he had a stronger arm and was far more athletic, allowing him to make plays out of nothing at times.

Yet, like with Brissett’s role as a starter, when Watson came back from his suspension, Dobbs’ role on the team ended as well. He was let go by the Browns, with the hope of re-signing him, but in a stroke of fortune for one another, Dobbs was claimed by the Detroit Lions.

Joshua Dobbs deserves a shot to prove he can play in the NFL

Dobbs will join the Lions’ practice squad and while the Lions aren’t mathematically eliminated from playoff contention just yet, they are not likely to get in. If they don’t, it’d be great to see the Lions activate and play Dobbs, as he’s someone who really looked impressive during his preseason outings with the Browns.

While it may seem like an insult, part of me hope he ends up in the USFL this off-season, so he can show what he can do as a starting quarterback. It’s worked for some other guys like Jordan Ta’amu and Josh Johnson, so why not Dobbs?

If Dobbs can excel in the USFL, maybe there’s a team that will take a chance on him. He deserves as much after the way he played for the Browns.
