The Cleveland Guardians got disrespected by MLB.com

How dare the folks at MLB.com disrespect the undefeated 2023 Cleveland Guardians like this? The Guards, despite taking the Yankees to five games in the MLB playoffs last year, were ranked just 12th in their first power rankings of the new year.

The Guardians were tied for the 8th-best record in 2022 and only got better in the offseason with the signings of Josh Bell and Mike Zunino. Sure, some of the other teams signed bigger names, but free-agent spending doesn’t usually equate to wins. So why should that matter in evaluating the teams?

Look at all the teams who signed major names in 2021, and notice how many of them didn’t finish anywhere near the Guards. Heck, the Padres have a huge roster full of guys who make way too much, and they didn’t even get to 90 wins.

Typical Guards bias.

Did we mention the Cleveland Guardians are undefeated in 2023?

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but the Guardians have no lost a ballgame in all of 2023. Besides the other 29 major league teams, who else in the major leagues can say that? The timing of the Cleveland Guardians tweeting out their undefeated status for the new year hours before the power ranking drop is coincidental but I have a feel the Guards knew they were about to be railroaded.

Even if the Guardians were unaware of their Power Rankings status to start the new year, the timing of the tweet against their standing in the Power Rankings is downright hilarious and some of the best potential incidental comedy yet.

The Guardians may not have won the World Series in 2022 but they’re still the kinds of social media hilarity.
