Cavs Top 3: Donovan Mitchell proves his worth in late-game comeback against the Boston Celtics
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Cavaliers had a statement win on Monday night against the Boston Celtics.
The Cleveland Cavaliers somehow came storming back on Monday night to upset the Boston Celtics in the closing minutes of overtime, tieing the game in the fourth quarter due to the Cavs outscoring Boston 31-17. The Cavs, who were down 92-78 entering the fourth and were getting regularly toasted at the three-point line by the Celtics, mounted a monumental comeback. The comeback wasn’t just any comeback either, it was against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.
Since the Cavs struggle with the top of the division this was a necessary win for many reasons, least of all as a proof of concept that this team can beat Boston should they meet in the playoffs. Not only that, it keeps the space between the Cavs and the New York Knicks at 1.5 games
Yet, it wasn’t Mitchell’s 40-points or the comeback the fans were talking about, but the huge “L” that one of their bench players took, Grant Williams.
You can’t tell someone you’re going to make both free throws to end the game and miss ’em. Listen, Williams, no one expected you to hit both, and had you not said anything, we’re pretty sure the Boston Celtics faithful would be very much on your side. You’re a power forward, you’re not supposed to be some elite free-throw shooter. But declaring you’re going to hit both just to show up Donovan Mitchell? Not your best move.
The Cavs would close out overtime with the win, 118-114.
