What free agents in the Top 75 should the Cleveland Browns consider?
By Chad Porto
59. QB Teddy Bridgewater
The Cleveland Browns need a quarterback to back up Deshaun Watson, we all know that but who should it be is going to be an open debate for some time. The smart move was to re-sign Jacoby Brissett, and have him come in as the team’s backup should anything happen to Watson. Watson’s history of knee injuries and his lingering legal issues really make a backup quarterback a necessity for the Browns.
After all, Watson’s massive contract basically makes the team’s competitive window much shorter than people really want it to be. So the team has to win now, otherwise what was all this nonsense for? Teddy Bridgewater would make for a solid backup option for the Browns in the event that Watson is either hurt or suspended.
Bridgewater isn’t a great quarterback by any means. He’s not the strongest thrower in the league, and his mobility was greatly affected when he got hurt with the Minnesota Vikings. Yet, he plays similar enough to Watson that you wouldn’t have to worry about re-structuring an entire offense around him.
That would’ve been an issue with Brissett, who’s a far more conventional pocket passer compared to Watson. Yet, Bridgewater is a bit more mobile and can roll out far more often than Brissett, so there’s some value in Bridgewater as a backup.
