The Cleveland Browns have done work to improve their most iffy positions but apparently, they haven’t done enough.

The Cleveland Browns came into the 2023 offseason looking to improve several positions on their team, namely their defensive line, their safeties, and their receivers. They’ve done the work, they’ve gotten a few modest names to bolster the team, at least on defense. They’ve also gone out of their way to land a few guys on offense to help the passing game.

None of them are great, by any means, but they’re better than what they had. Yet, Mike Clay of ESPN has been tracking the team’s rosters through the offseason. He’s grading out each team’s positions and if you’re a Browns fan, things aren’t looking good for the moves the team has been making.

As of March 24, the Browns’ most problematic positions remain just that. The Browns’ defensive line is the 9th worst in the league still. Their receiver corp is still the 11th worst in the league, and their safeties are still 10th worth in the league. Not great, especially considering the amount of effort the Browns have put into those positions.

But all is not lost.

Despite bad positional grades, the Cleveland Browns are closer to the top than not

I’ve not been a big fan of a lot of the moves the Browns have made this offseason, as most seem to be mid-tier at best. Better than what the team had, sure, but good enough to beat the best teams in the league? Who knows. It’s possible this is the magic combination of players that takes the Browns to the Super Bowl. It’s also possible that it’s not.

What we do know though, is according to the metrics listed, the Browns are a Top 9 team in the league with their current roster. Their offensive line is second only to the Philadelphia Eagles, and their cornerbacks are fifth in the league. Not only that but their quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends, and defensive ends are all trending high.

So maybe the team hasn’t improved that much at their worst positions but they do still have the talent to lean on.
