5 talking points from the Cleveland Guardians series win against the Seattle Mariners
By Chad Porto
What are the biggest talking points from the Cleveland Guardians series win against the Seattle Mariners?
The Cleveland Guardians got a much-needed opening season series win against the Seattle Mariners. While the 3-1 series win wasn’t the best it could be, as the Guards did lose their Opening Day game against Seattle, it was a pretty good start to the season.
What was most interesting, however, was what the series gave us. While it is very early in the season, and things can and will most likely change as time moves on, it’s fair to bask in what is happening at the moment.
This is a team that balled out against Seattle, and despite dropping the first game, looked fantastic in their 3-1 series win.
The Cleveland Guardians have had some exciting outings against the Seattle Mariners
The Cleveland Guardians have power in their lineup
The Cleveland Guardians have some real power in their lineup, at least for now. Josh Naylor, Andres Gimenez, and Mike Zunino all cranked home runs this series, something that wasn’t always likely to happen last season.
Steven Kwan is starting hot
Steven Kwan had 6 RBIs in this series alone, and while five RBIs came in one game, it’s not something we should be aiming to take away from him. Clearly, Kwan is picking up right where he left off last year.
Mike Zunino may be a great signing
Mike Zunino has already contributed hugely and is only six home runs shy of what Austin Hedges posted last year. Zunino is starting off the year hot, hitting over .400 (a number he won’t maintain), but he’s also calling great games too. He’s a great mind behind the plate and the plate and it feels like the pitchers have a great report with him already.
The starting pitching wasn’t great
It isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Shane Beiber didn’t look great but looked fine, and Hunter Gaddis and Cal Quantrill were far from Cy Young-worthy in their first starts. This isn’t unexpected, as the new pitch clock is going to be something to adjust to.
The bullpen is everything you could’ve wanted
The bullpen is loaded with arms for this exact type of series. The team doesn’t seem to have a weak link in its bullpen, with the only lingering question mark belonging to James Karinchak.
