Is there any truth to the rumors that Greg Newsome wants to be traded from the Cleveland Browns?

The Cleveland Browns had to deal with some rumors regarding Greg Newsome today.

The Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome found himself in some unexpected drama this afternoon when a rumor broke that the soon-to-be-third-year cornerback wanted a trade. The trade was rebuked by Newsome and his new agent Drew Rosenhaus, though that didn’t stop people from speculating about the future of Newsome.

Brad Stainbrook, a solid reporter at 247 Sports reported the story and then retracted it after several other outlets claimed Newsome isn’t seeking a trade. The issue with Stainbrook’s reporting isn’t that he lied, it’s that he relied only on one source. That source ended up being wrong.

Newsome tweeted out that he’s not looking to be moved, and in a sign that he’s comfortable here in Cleveland, even took over Jarvis Landry’s charity softball game, which he intends on running for the foreseeable future.

But is there some smoke to this fire? Newsome had a meeting with the Browns on Tuesday, and that meeting may be the source of the conflict right now between media and players.

Greg Newsome’s meeting with the Cleveland Browns was more than likely to start early talks for a new contract

The Cleveland Browns meeting with Newsome before the start of the offseason program is obviously for one thing and one thing only; contract talks. That’s an assumption, but you don’t hire the bulldog of an agent like Drew Rosenhaus if you’re not looking for a massive deal.

Some of the biggest names the league has seen. Names who are known for demanding trades if they don’t get their way. Some of the people who have hired Rosenhaus include Terrell Owens, Plaxico Burress, Antonio Brown, Rob Gronkowski, Tyreek Hill, Warren Sapp, and others.

The thing the biggest names always have in common is that they get paid when Rosenhaus is their agent. The Browns are facing a very tight budget in the future. Things could get worse for the Browns sooner rather than later.

I don’t believe that Newsome wants a trade, though I would bet (if I were a betting man), that Rosenhaus will push for a trade after this year or next if Newsome isn’t given a massive extension and the Browns opt for his fifth-year extension.

That’s an assumption, not a fact, to be clear. Rosenhaus plays hardball and if he believes in Newsome enough to take him on as a client, and rep him in meetings with the Browns’ brass, then you can believe that he’ll do whatever he feels is in the best nature of his client and Rosenhaus’ own bank account.

Which is to get paid. So Newsome eventually demanding a trade may not be the wildest idea.
