Do the Cleveland Cavaliers have any draft picks to trade this off-season?

The Cleveland Cavaliers have made two trades and have basically eroded all of their first-round draft picks for the next five years. Acquiring Donovan Mitchell and Caris LeVert cost a lot for the future of the team. Mitchell cost the Cavs three-first round picks up-front, with two other first-rounders belonging to the Jazz if the Cavs have better positions. In those cases, the Jazz would get the Cavs’ spot and the Cavs would fall back to the Jazz’s spot.

The Indiana Pacers also hold the rights to the Cavs’ 2023 first-round pick. It had a Top-14 protection but seeing as how the Cavs are picking 26th in the draft, that draft pick now belongs to the Pacers.

This means the 2023, 2025, 2027, and 2029 first-round picks belong to other teams. The Cavs are also losing their 2024 second-round pick to either the New York Knicks, Memphis Grizzlies, or Indiana Pacers depending on where it falls. So that would mean the Cavs are out of luck with draft picks, right? Wrong.

What draft picks do the Cleveland Cavaliers still own?

Currently, the Cavs have 12 picks between 2023 and 2029, with 11 of them being second-rounders. The Cavs can also use the 2026 and 2028 first-round picks to draft a player and then trade them should they so deem fit, as long as they wait for the Jazz to decide to switch with them or not.

They also have the 2024 first-round draft pick as well. While 11 second-round picks may not be enough to get a trade done with say the Dallas Mavericks over Luka Doncic, maybe it’d be enough to land someone like DeMar DeRozan or Pascal Siakam. Assuming you coupled a few other pieces in the trade, like Isaac Okoro.

The Cavs could also bundle a bunch of their picks together, and ship them off for a first-rounder or two. While that may seem like a fool’s errand, as to who would make that trade, there isn’t much difference in value between early second-round picks and late first-round picks. And you may just con someone into making a deal with you, completely ignorant of the fact that your recently acquired first-round picks aren’t the best.
