The Cleveland Cavaliers may want to go after Kristaps Porzingis, but should they?

The Cleveland Cavaliers seem pretty content with their squad right now. The front office seemingly intends to add some talent in free agency, the draft, and maybe a trade, but there doesn’t appear to be any need right now to make a huge swing and shake up the roster substantially. That doesn’t mean that some people aren’t interested in going for the fences again, like someone named Kristaps Porzingis.

Twitter user Tyler Johnson suggested the deal, which would focus on Jarrett Allen, Isaac Okoro, and Cedi Osman going to the Washington Wizards for Porzingis. Our sister site, King James Gospel has also written about landing the All-Star forward, breaking down the three pros and cons about it.

We’re not going to go extensive, essentially this is a trade to “upgrade” the center position. Does it? Well, Porzingis is a quicker player than Allen, with a better and more well-rounded offensive game. He would improve the offense. And while Porzingis isn’t a bad defender, Allen is better, admittedly. So you’re probably improving the offense as much as you’re hurting the defense.

Personally, I like both players and would be fine with either one. It’s the cost that has me balking at the trade.

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ biggest issue is depth

Have we learned nothing from the NBA Playoffs? The Cavaliers don’t need Porzingis. They need better depth. They need someone who can be efficient from three, and who can play defense in the post without a huge drop-off from Allen and Evan Mobley. They need a starting small forward who isn’t going to harm the defense or offense by being on the court.

Porzingis doesn’t help the Cavs in any of those ways. He’s a starter and an expensive one at that. The Cavs don’t have the depth to just give up Okoro and Osman. He’s not someone who can stretch the floor that much, and as a low-post player, you really don’t want him to do that too much anyway.

He’s a great player, he’s just not one that the Cavs need.
