There is no doubt who will be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.

Here at Factory of Sadness, we have discussed for some time now the Browns 2016 season with the expectation that quarterback Robert Griffin III will be their starter. Now, that expectation has finally become official.

Griffin, outside of some throws early in camp has been very solid for the Browns as he learns not only a new system, but also a new way of playing quarterback. The news of the Browns naming Griffin is not a surprise, but the thought that there was a legitimate competition early on was blown out of the proportion — Not necessarily in and around Cleveland, but nationally.

Griffin had a very good showing in the team’s recent scrimmage. Had he struggled, perhaps the official decision would have been pushed back. Despite his success in camp and the progress he made under quarterback guru and Browns head coach Hue Jackson, plenty of work is still ahead.

Griffin needs to show in live game action during the preseason that he truly is the guy to lead Cleveland this season. There has been plenty of rumors and discussions revolving around veteran backup Josh McCown, but the likelihood of him being dealt is slim.

McCown is a great mentor and safety net if he needs to play. He also can still provide the Browns with above a serviceable level of play. McCown is not the typical backup and it is great for so many reasons that he is part of the Browns organization.

Making the decision to name Griffin the starter eliminates the thought of a quarterback controversy during the preseason, as well as the uncertainty at the position. That is, as long as Griffin continues to play well.

Griffin did not play last season but in a way it is a blessing in disguise. Griffin was able to learn more about himself and the quarterback position, as well as everything that he needs to work on.

I know that there are some people who may think “Griffin is the quarterback, oh boy, another lost season”. I get where you are coming from, but remember he is probably in the best possible position.

Working with Jackson as a still very young quarterback, who is very athletic and has already had success in the NFL should lead to success. That success may not completely be seen this year, but if enough of it is shown this fall, that mannequin we are all familiar with all of those previous quarterbacks’ names should stop.

This news is officially known but the quarterback position still has plenty of questions. Cleveland is going to have to figure out the futures and what roles, if any they will have of McCown, Cody Kessler, and Austin Davis.

Slowly but surely, Cleveland is taking care of business solidifying key positions. Should Griffin be the guy Jackson believes he can be, that will be an incredible benefit to their rebuild.
