The likelihood of the Cleveland Browns trading away quarterback Josh McCown could be increasing.

Injuries are part of football. However, when multiple injuries are impacting a specific position, teams look into every option to help their roster. As the preseason continues, the better the Cleveland Browns may be in a position to trade if they decide to.

Josh McCown is a very important piece to the Browns quarterback room. There’s been plenty of rumors surrounding McCown’s future in Cleveland, but everyone has their price.

Those previously mentioned rumors were surrounding a potential trade involving McCown to the Dallas Cowboys. In return, the potential return has been draft picks, players, and everything in between.

Now, Dallas rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has been opening up eyes, but a trade to Dallas could still happen. If Cleveland does not trade McCown, but wants to trade him, the San Francisco 49ers could be a fit.

The 49ers have Colin Kaepernick but he has been dealing with a shoulder injury. Fellow 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert is also being considered for the starting job, but like his competition, has not been effective. In fact, I am not sure one would consider his play even average. That has to be a concern.

More from Cleveland Browns

To make matters, worse, San Francisco just lost another signal-caller in former Cleveland Browns quarterback Thaddeus Lewis to a torn ACL. The torn ACL will cost Lewis the season.

Since Gabbert is no guarantee to be efficient and the unknown that Kaepernick is surrounded with, it would be wise for them to call the Cleveland Browns. Still, making a trade could be tough because of Dallas’ potential interest.

If San Francisco calls the Browns, a bidding battle could begin. As I mentioned earlier, everyone has their price. Should the bidding become very serious for McCown, what would be Cleveland’s price?

Lets say San Francisco offers a fourth or fifth round pick to Cleveland for McCown? How does the Browns not say yes? Regardless of what may be Cleveland’s price, they are going to have to make another move at quarterback.

Given the quarterbacks on the roster, it will either be McCown or Austin Davis. However, Cleveland could try to get Davis onto their practice squad, but that is unlikely. Davis is not a great quarterback, but he is serviceable and teams around the NFL will want  depth.

Regardless of whether McCown is a Brown, Cowboy, or 49er in a couple, there is a strong possibility that he will play this season. Because those teams have not solidified the quarterback position (Browns and Robert Griffin III are a TBD), they are in the position they are in.

McCown can help any quarterback group. Still, if the interest is intense enough that may not be in Cleveland. Should he get dealt, the Browns must get a respectable return. If they do not, why even trade him?
