The Cleveland Browns have struggled for years in the NFL draft. What could happen if things do not go as planned again this year?

Trades are a big part of the NFL draft. The Cleveland Browns already made one trade and could look to make another deal before finally selecting a player.

Heading into this year’s draft, Cleveland’s needs include offensive line, wide receiver, quarterback, and linebacker. There will be options at eight (assuming another trade does not occur). Should the Cleveland Browns stay where they are, one need should be able to get checked off of the list.

If Cleveland continues to move down the draft, then the chance(s) to solidify a position(s) could be in jeopardy. By the end of the second day of the draft (first three rounds), Cleveland’s draft should include some combination of players that would fill their needs.

The years of trading up and down has not been a positive for the Cleveland Browns. When there are quality players available, trading should be afterthought, especially when said players could fill a need.

Currently, Cleveland has 12 draft picks which is tied for the most of any team. The thought of quality of quantity is understandable, but if the Cleveland Browns front office wants to really do things differently, then stop trading back. When previous regimes traded back, their return on investing back did not work out. There is no reason to continue down that road.

Trading back simply will be their worse case scenario. Maybe that realization will not be understood now, but a few years from now Cleveland Browns fans and the organization could be disappointed. Yes, the regimes in the past thought during their respective drafts that they were doing the right thing.

Obviously, that turned out to not be the case. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam had a change of heart this offseason as he wanted to go the long-term route with a new regime. Well, if Cleveland continues to trade back (whether that be in the first round or later), the list of talented players they bypass will continue to increase. Haslam also wanted to do something different.

Should more trade backs continue, then nothing changed. Yes, Cleveland will select players that can help the team, but they likely will not be on the same level as players who were drafted earlier.

We cannot ignore history when it comes to the Cleveland Browns and the NFL draft. Evaluating where Cleveland is, what draft picks they have, and their needs, I would not be surprised if they trade back again. That said, I would be very cautious.

On the other hand, Cleveland has so many resources that trading up in the draft instead should be a preference. Rather than settling for someone, the Browns could move up and select exactly who they want regardless of round. At the end of the draft, I would be very surprised if Cleveland did not fill all of their needs.

The Browns should come away with at least two wide receivers, a quarterback (possibly Memphis’ Paxton Lynch or Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott), front seven help, as well as depth along the offensive line. Be ready Browns fans, this year’s draft could be a wild ride.
