The Cleveland Browns are not going to use much time before selecting a starting quarterback.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Cleveland Browns will be giving the majority of first team reps at the quarterback position to Robert Griffin III. Such a plan is just the first step for the team as they unofficially announce Griffin as the starter.

Now, the Browns fan base, media, and organization will not have to wait long for the official word. Browns head coach Hue Jackson stated that “It’s going to be before the first preseason game”.

Heading into the offseason, Cleveland’s poor play at quarterback last season made it clear there were going to be changes at the position. With Griffin being Cleveland’s (and especially Jackson’s) first and main addition at quarterback, it is not a shock to see Griffin basically be given complete reigns this early.

The exact date is not known as to when the Cleveland Browns will declare Griffin as the starter prior to the first preseason game. On the other hand, at least everyone knows it is not a matter of it, but simply a matter of when.

Knowing Griffin will be leading the offense this early should benefit the offense a great deal. Rather than getting chemistry down with multiple quarterbacks, Cleveland’s offensive players can now focus on excelling in their new offense without the extra drama and speculation of who will be their quarterback.

Veteran quarterback Josh McCown is a solid backup, but he is not the Cleveland Browns’ answer (even in the short-term). That said, other teams would be happy to have him on their roster to help with their young quarterbacks.

To that point, when a team like the Browns have a quarterback who is athletic as Griffin, he must play. Simultaneously, McCown has to be the best backup/mentor he can be (which he has been). If there were any doubts regarding Griffin’s game, Jackson and the Cleveland Browns organization would not have set up the plan they are currently in the process in.

Had the quarterback decision been pushed off until sometime into the preseason, would that have been a bad approach? No, because Griffin’s play in meaningful snaps would be the ultimate deciding factor.

Without such snaps, Griffin has to be doing something in camp to make Cleveland two feet in already. He has had his moments of successful moments along with inconsistencies at time. However, such a mixed bag could be just the media over-analyzing Griffin.

If Griffin did not give the Cleveland Browns the confidence they need to make a decision, a quarterback controversy likely would have been more evident. Since there is not one, Jackson appears to be determined to get the most out of Griffin– something that could pay off dividends later on.
