The Cleveland Browns may end up adding a veteran coordinator to their coaching staff.

Adjustments to the Cleveland Browns coaching staff was expected this offseason. In fact, more was probably made than first originally expected.

First, Cleveland made an almost complete overhaul on defense, headlined by Ray Horton receiving his walking papers. Most recently, the Browns lost assistant head coach-offense Pep Hamilton to the University of Michigan where he will be their assistant head coach/passing coordinator.

Now, Cleveland has to find a replacement, and perhaps they have already zoned in on “the guy”. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Greg Roman could end up filling Hamilton’s spot. The ironic aspect with this news is that Michigan’s first choice was Roman for Hamilton’s new job.

More from Factory of Sadness

Should Roman join the Browns, would his title be the same as it was when Hamilton was part of Cleveland’s coaching staff? Head coach Hue Jackson likely would prefer to continue call the plays, regardless of who he brings in. So, how much influence could Roman have on the gameplan?

Maybe a lot. If it has to do with what he has done most recently with both the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills, expect the running game to be the focus. Hamilton has had success most notably with Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck while at Stanford. Meanwhile, Roman’s best player he has coached in recent seasons has been Bills running back LeSean McCoy.

Regardless if Roman takes the Browns job or not, many adjustments will need to be made this offseason. Now, not all of them will be made in the coming months, but progress has to be made. First and foremost is with their offensive line, which has been a mess!

Cleveland’s running back duo of Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson did better than they did this season than last, but there is still plenty of room to improve upon. Whether that means adding to the position or them actually stepping up their game is to be determined.

Due to how critical it is for the offensive line to be improved now, waiting another season to upgrade the running back position is the best route to go. When Roman was an offensive coordinator and his offense was rolling on all cylinders, they were tough to stop.

Combining Jackson’s great offensive mind and Roman’s background, Cleveland’s offense is something that could turn out to be very exciting in 2017. Like with their other coaching changes, I would expect a decision soon. The Browns are coaching in the Senior Bowl and they will need to have their coaching vacancies filled for the game ASAP.
