NFL Owners Meetings Cleveland Browns Last Chance For Jimmy Garoppolo?
Keep an eye on the NFL Owner’s Meetings for the Cleveland Browns to make, what could be, their final push for Jimmy Garoppolo.
In the week since the Cleveland Browns fascinated the NFL world by taking on Brock Osweiler‘s $16 million contract for 2017, Browns’ town has been asking: “What’s next?”
The assumption is the Browns are attempting to make a trade for New England Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo. Over the weekend, it was reported the Browns made an offer of two second-round picks for Jimmy G, and were rebuffed.
Patriots’ boss Bill Belichick is clearly open for business, evidenced by his trade with the Saints for Brandin Cooks. So what’s the hold up?
Belichick may have no desire to trade away Tom Brady‘s backup. This has been reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Brady, who just won his fifth Super Bowl, is 40 years old. You wouldn’t expect him to fall apart next season, or even the season after, but you just never know.

The NFL owner’s meeting, which is scheduled to take place March 26-29 in Phoenix, Ariz. may offer up a final indication of what the Patriots plan to do with Garoppolo. These get togethers are much like MLB’s Winter Meetings. Rumors and speculation run rampant, as teams prepare for the NFL Draft, which commences a month later.
ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi was asked about Garoppolo’s future, addressing the topic in his weekly “Hey, Tony” column. The long-time Browns scribe believes Belichick would want to make the trade with enough time to create a plans for his new-found selections before the draft. Grossi’s point: The closer we get to draft day, the more unlikely it is the Patriots will move Garoppolo.
"If [Belichick] wants to make a trade, however, I’m sure it would happen comfortably ahead of the draft to give him time to plot what to do with the picks acquired. Some days I believe a trade is possible. The next day I feel no way. I’m thinking some clarity may come at NFL owners meetings the last week of March."
If the league meetings come and go, and after a week, the Browns still haven’t made a trade for Garoppolo, you’ve got to believe Garoppolo isn’t destined to wear an orange helmet in 2017.

Sashi Brown, Paul DePodesta and company may have a trick up their sleeve, though. Remember, there were no rumors of the Osweiler trade going down. It just happened. Perhaps their next move will go down the same way.
