Cleveland Browns: Could The Houston Texans Regret Trading Brock?
By Ryan Rosko
Weeks following the Cleveland Browns/Houston Texans trade, could there now be seller remorse?
At the start of the new NFL year when free agency started, the Cleveland Browns made a blockbuster trade for quarterback Brock Osweiler. In the trade, Cleveland also acquired a second round pick from the Houston Texans.
As time progresses, it appears more likely that Osweiler will be with the Browns for the 2017 season. Additional changes with his future could come up, but if he were to remain with Cleveland, it should be only for a season.
Regardless of what happens with Osweiler, could the Texans be regretting that they traded the former Arizona State product? Perhaps behind closed doors they are, but a change was needed for them and it also benefited Cleveland simultaneously.
Not only did Cleveland acquire that previously mentioned high draft pick, but they also acquired a veteran that could help them in some way. Meanwhile, earlier today, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Todd Archer reported that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will retire.
Dallas has since released Romo rather than placing him on the retired list. It was expected that Romo would have been Houston’s quarterback preference following their Cleveland trade had he not retired.
Now, Houston’s best options for a veteran free agent quarterback are Jay Cutler and Colin Kaepernick. For them, either could work out, but I wonder, would they have preferred keeping Osweiler instead if they could not have landed Romo?

Houston will not let that information be known if that is the case and besides, Cleveland is happy to have Osweiler. Otherwise, the Browns would have moved on from him by now.
So, could the Browns trade one of their quarterbacks, possibly even Osweiler back to Houston now that they are in limbo? No, of course not. That would be pointless and stupid from Cleveland’s point of view.
Even with Osweiler on the Browns roster, that does not mean Cleveland has their quarterback position solved. It is far from that as they still to need to work to upgrade that area.
One option could be developing Cody Kessler, while keeping Osweiler for a season. From there, the Browns can determine if they want to go ahead with Kessler for 2018 or not. Or, Osweiler is just a filler until Cleveland adds a rookie quarterback this offseason.
Regardless, both Houston and Cleveland are franchises that need help with their respective quarterback positions. Until something changes, both teams will be evaluating some of the same quarterbacks until each of them finds their answer.

Moving on from Osweiler was the right thing for Houston and both teams could benefit from their respective return in their trade. Time will tell. At the end of the day, regret is something Houston should not consider feeling, even if the Osweiler does well in Cleveland.
