Cleveland Browns: There are pages that need to be turned prior to the 2018 season

The Cleveland Browns have done a very good job this offseason but more work still needs to be done.

Notice I did not say the Cleveland Browns have done a great job this offseason. It is close but no cigar. The only reason that is the case is because they view T.J. Carrie and E.J. Gaines higher than they arguably than they should.

Carrie is not a top corner in this league but is a solid piece for the defense. If he was brought in to be the CB1, I’d be very cautious with the expectations. The same goes for Gaines.

Should the Browns come away with one of the top corners in the draft and a quality wideout, both of whom can start as rookies, I’d then say great.

In terms of the overall picture of what Cleveland has done, what’s not to like? From improvements in the running game and secondary to a great addition to wide receiver and quarterback, 2018 won’t be like previous seasons.

Speaking of 2018, Cleveland is going to win some games. How about that? Exactly how many varies right now but before (and during) the season, there are aspects of the team that they must move on from. There are pages that must be turned, three in fact.

The first is the quarterback situation. At the end of the month, the Browns are going to draft their next quarterback.

That individual will get to learn from veterans, Tyrod Taylor and Drew Stanton. Everything starts with the quarterback and because of that GM John Dorsey made sure the quarterback room doesn’t resemble 2017 going forward.

He dealt DeShone Kizer to the Green Bay Packers, Cody Kessler to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Kevin Hogan to the Washington Redskins.  Assuming Taylor and Stanton are healthy all year, Cleveland’s long-term outlook at the position is bright.

The second-page impacts head coach Hue Jackson and how he coaches prior to and during the regular season. Jackson is 1-31, 1-31! Wow. Don’t forget, he still has not jumped in the lake. Let’s say with the talent on the roster now and the rookies they will add, Jackson coaches the team to a significant improvement.

That’s great, but for Jackson, what would be significant? One, two games? For the Browns players, they need to put 1-31 behind them.

If they don’t, similar results are likely to happen. There is going to be questions about the past. As long as players are ready to focus only on what they can control while hoping Jackson improves as a coach, that is all anyone can ask for.

Even if the Browns win five to seven games, that should not be enough for Jackson to keep his job… again. If a different coach was the head coach, I could envision five to seven wins being realistic but with Jackson, I don’t see it.

2018 is going to be a waiting game. Despite the assumed increase in wins, the players must continue to look at the long-term outlook.

Everything seems great now but that’s also because no games have been played. It is just a matter of time before Jackson is replaced with someone who can actually develop quarterbacks and lead a team to many achievements. Dorsey will get to hire his preferred head coach eventually. 1-31 may be easy to push to the side now but we will all see if that holds true (hopefully it does) when the games count for real.

The last page ties into the first two: Win. Cleveland is not going to go from a winless team to a playoff team, but Taylor will win games. The Browns must crawl before they can walk. With the additions though, that crawling won’t be that slow.

Cleveland has lost too many games for far too long. It time for them to be a winner. With the rookie they are going to draft, wins are on their way. In the meantime, we can see what the Browns roster can do with Taylor under center before the rookie gets his shot. One step at a time is key.

If Jackson gets better as a coach, then great, but I wouldn’t bet on it. With the beginning of a winning foundation being laid out by the players that were added this offseason, more optimism than ever is being seen and expressed.

It is a process Cleveland is taking and Dorsey is the right person overseeing everything. With a likely new coach in 2019 and more of the winning culture in place, the wins are going to be increasing by the season. For 2018, let’s just say it is a preview of what the future truly holds.
