Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry says team could make more moves
By Chad Porto
Any fans concerned that the team still needs a little work done before the season begins, don’t fret, Browns GM Andrew Berry agrees, mostly.
If Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski appearing on Bull and the Fox wasn’t a big enough treat for Cleveland fans starved for interesting things to pay attention to, team GM Andrew Berry was on the Ken Carmen show early on Wednesday to talk the off-season not being over. The team is still linked to former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney who is looking for a new home after failing to come to terms with the Seattle Seahawks. Berry wants everyone to know that if the move makes sense, he’s going to make it, telling Carmen and co-host Andy Baskin;
"If there is something out there that makes sense in free agent acquistion or a trade acquistion, we’ll do that at any position on the 90-man roster"
He also went to say that he isn’t going to mortgage the future, that they’re going to be responsible with any moves made over the rest of the off-season, saying there are still plenty of opportunities to improve the team over the next four months.
In the same interview, Berry described himself as a “straight shooter” and that seems to be accurate during the course of the interview. He waved off any confirmation that Rashard Higgins had signed a new deal but did say the sides were talking and didn’t seem to dismiss the idea of getting a player like Clowney though he wasn’t not mentioned by name; just that the team’s offseason wasn’t over just because the NFL Draft is.
The interview did highlight that Berry will forever tweak the roster as needed; if needed, but gone are the days of the Browns giving up their future for their present. After all, great franchises are great franchises because they’re always competing. Gearing up for one year of potential is always a recipe for disaster.
Just look at the Cavaliers.
If nothing else, the interview highlighted that Berry (for now) was the right choice for the job and comes across as a stable influence on the club. He also tempered expectations on the draft class, telling Baskin that the team and he won’t know what they have in this class until a few years down the road.
Fans should feel confident in this man as the Browns GM after this interview.
