Cleveland Browns: Fans should have cautious optimism about Jarvis Landry’s return
By Chad Porto
The Cleveland Browns have activated Jarvis Landry off the PUP list but fans should be cautiously optimistic about what he can do in 2020.
Jarvis Landry is ready to get to work for the Cleveland Browns. Landry, who was just activated off of the team’s PUP list (physically unable to perform), is coming off of major offseason surgery on his hip. Surgery on that area of the body can often change an athlete forever, and in some cases can be career-ending depending on how it heals. For Landry, he appears to be at full health.
The Browns are hopeful he’ll be ready for the Baltimore Ravens on Sep 13, and as of right now he appears on track for the season-opening game. What Landry will we get, however, is going to be anyone’s guess. Hip injuries are nothing to scoff at, and while he’s been able to be active to a point, he’s still far off from being game ready. With regards to his conditioning and his ability to get back into “football shape”, which is oftentimes two vastly different things.
The hope is that Landry is 90% of what he was, if not all the way back, but if you’re a fan of the Browns, it’s best to air on the side of caution for 2020. Landry should be brought back slowly and at his pace. Rushing him back isn’t going to help the team at all. The team and fans saw what limitations banged-up receivers like Odell Beckham did in 2020. It might be better to put a less talented but healthier player out there instead.
The Browns will need Landry at his best, but if that means giving him a few weeks off to start the season and then bringing him in slowly, that’s what you should do then. He might break his streak of Pro Bowls but teams have to plan for next year while also planning for this year. Keeping Landry as healthy as possible is priority one for the team when it comes to him.
Even if it means he only plays half the year.
