While the city celebrated the Cleveland Browns securing their best start in nearly 30 years, and clinching a winning season, Cleveland State tanked hard.

For those new to Cleveland sports, or are from out of town, you may not realize that Cleveland actually has a Division I sports program at Cleveland State University. The college is most known for women’s basketball, wrestling, and most notably the men’s basketball team. The schools had nine post-season appearances, and two of them were in the NCAA tournament. So when CSU took on Ohio University, no one really expected them to lose hugely, let alone give up the largest run of consecutive points in Division I college history.

In what I thought was some gimmicky meme on Twitter, Cleveland State gave up 40 consecutive points to Ohio, which secured CSU an 0-2 start on this young season. CSU would not see a single player net double digits in the route, with the team shooting a combined 13-57, or 22.8% shooting from the floor.

On the flip side, Ohio University had six players hit double digits and shot 35-59 for 59.3% with sophomore Lunden McDay leading the way with 20 points, and former James Madison transfer, senior Dwight Wilson added another 19 points.

This is the second year the team has been guided by head coach Dennis Gates, who took over for Dennis Felton who lasted only two seasons. The CSU Vikings are still trying to find the successor for Gary Waters, who retired at the end of the 2017 season after coaching the team through its most successful time in existence.

During Waters’s tenure, the Vikings went to three NIT tournaments, two CIT tournaments, and one NCAA tournament. Since his retirement, the program has looked lost. Now the Vikings are going to have to rebound after setting a dubious record against the Ohio University Bobcats.

A game that the Bobcats won with a score of 101-46.
